Customs Handling of Import and Export Freight (CHIEF) is a HMRC system used for processing electronic customs declarations in the UK. All businesses submitting import customs declarations should now do so via CDS. All export declarations should be submitted via CDS from 30th November 2023 when CHIEF is due to close.
The Customs Declaration Service (CDS) is HMRC’s new digital system that supports making import and export declarations when moving goods into and out of the UK. From 30th November 2023, CDS will replace CHIEF for import and export declarations.
Customs Handling of Import and Export Freight (CHIEF) is being replaced by the Customs Declaration Service (CDS). CDS is a resilient, reliable, system which is adaptable to the future needs of businesses. Exporters and declarants can use CHIEF for the submission of export declarations until 30 November 2023. Beyond this date, businesses should submit all import and export declarations to HMRC via CDS, unless HMRC have specifically granted an extension to your business.
